eToro has released a solid trading platform with access to a lot of financial products and 13 international markets. For a very low cost. They do offer a lot of valuable research data and information, a lot of which is derived from their engaged community of investors.

Their fee model is a little more confusing than other brokers on this list but does workout as a very cheap option for both small and large investments. eToro does encourage active investing, and the feel of its platform is designed for this. Active trading isn’t something we endorse for most people, but it can still be used by all investing types. Setting up your account with eToro is a little different from some of the other brokers. It is completed easily online and takes around 15 minutes. However, since eToro does allow trading of derivatives and CFDs they require some different information from other brokers. For example, you have to complete a quick questionnaire about your personal financial situation and knowledge and also a quiz about some financial products.

This is a requirement from ASIC to ensure the financial safety of those investing in derivatives.

Research

eToro is pretty unique in the fact that it features a forum section allowing investors to discuss their opinions. This is a decent feature, but can also be detrimental to investors to be constantly surrounded by different opinions on their trading platform, I can see this impacting emotion and causing people to trade more frequently based on hype.

They do have some basic research information for investors. Including fundamental ratios and stats as well as company financials. Once your account is set up you get access to their research section, which gives you access to analyst forecasts.

Website Breakdown: The eToro website is set up well and easy to use. When you first log in you’re taken to your watchlist which is prefilled with popular shares. From here you can click into each of these or search for a security, allowing you to easily buy in about 3 clicks. From this, we can see that eToro’s main audience is the trading community rather than buy and hold investors.

One cool feature and one that is similar to SelfWealth is that you can view other people’s portfolios and performance. eToro takes this a step further and allows you to ‘Copy’ them. This will allow your portfolio to passively invest and trade whenever these traders do.

They also have ‘CopyPortfolios’ which works off a similar concept but instead of following other investors, you follow a set fund. This is a cool feature, but something I don’t see myself using due to my preference for passive over actively managed funds. It’s also important to remember that although some of these have performed very well, that past performance is not an indication of future returns.

Initially setting up your account online with Stake was easy taking about 5 minutes. However, they do have stricter identity verification requiting you to upload:

  1. Photo of your Govt issued ID – Driver’s license, Passport, etc.
  2. A photo of you holding that ID

This step adds another 20 minutes to complete and once submitted you have to wait for complete verification before browsing the platform.

Research

STAKE has very limited stock research. They record basic fundamentals such as market capitalization, PE ratio, dividend yield, and pricing data. They also have very limited coverage on financials. Stake seems to focus on being a simple easy to use low-cost trading platform. Stakes Premium model ‘STAKE Black’ does unlock a few more features, but personally, I can’t justify the extra cost.

STAKE lacks many of the advanced charting tools to make this a viable platform for any short-term, high-frequency trader. The charting options are minimal.

What they lack in research they do make up for in website design. They also have a great news feed that is also typically up to date and lists worthwhile articles.

When you first log in to STAKE you are taken to your Dashboard which shows your positions and Portfolio overview. The dashboard is very simple and does lack a few key features we would like to see, such as portfolio graphing to benchmark your investments over time.

NabTrade

Nabtrade, Best International Share Trading Platforms, International Brokers, Best International Brokers

NabTrade came in third place on our favorite brokers list. This is a well-earnt spot for a very popular brokerage platform owned by one of Australia’s big banks: NAB. They earned this spot by offering competitive prices and excellent research and technology.

NabTrade also has a great history of offering access to international shares.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Pros

  • Excellent Research
  • Big Bank Security

NabTrade is pretty standard in its fees. They charge brokerage fees from $14.95, they charge an Fx spread of 0.5-0.8%, and for inactive accounts, they charge 0.5% of international holdings yearly. As far as banks go NabTrade is highly competitive in its Fees. However, some of the other brokers on this list do offer cheaper alternatives.

Account Set-up

Setting up your international account is very easy with NabTrade. All domestic NabTrade customers will already be set up and ready to trade, there are no further applications. Joining up to NabTrade is relatively easy and is much like setting up a bank account. It can all be completed online.

To get set up head over to NabTrade and chose sign up. First, you chose what sort of account you’d like to set up i.e. Individual, Joint, Company, Cash Account, or Margin Lending. An Individual Cash Account is set up for most people unless you wanted to borrow to buy shares.

You then enter all your personal details and confirm your identity and that’s it, it’s that simple. They also have a lot of resources and customer support in case you get stuck.

Minimum Deposit, Deposits and Withdrawls

There is no minimum purchasable value for shares listed on NYSE, NASDAQ, AMEX, LSE or XETRA, you can not buy fractional shares. ASX has a $500 minimum buy-in on shares.

App and Website

Website Breakdown: NabTrade’s website is intuitive, easy to use, and works well. Their search bar allows you to easily search any security and easily find out in-depth information or execute a trade. Their holding section gives you an overview of your portfolio, allowing you to view your basic returns, as well as previous shares. This section can be a little ‘awkward’ to navigate. There is also no option to view your total portfolio in graphical formats.

App Breakdown: Just recently NabTrade released its new mobile App. The new app is easier to navigate and allows trading and portfolio features on the mobile platform. Compared to some of the other brokers on this list it does feel a little bulky and crowded. Mostly due to trying to cram a lot of information into a small space.

SelfWealth does present a decent amount of stock research on its platform. For each stock, we are presented with basic key metrics including earnings per share, PE, yield, shares on issue, earnings forecasts, financials, and more.

One big advantage of SelfWealth is their massive community engagement which allows them to collect and present unique sentiment data. This level of information is unique to SelfWealth. The platform also presents basic fundamental data by REFINITIV, which services many major brokerages including Commsec and Nabtrade.

One thing that SelfWealth lacks is the level of professional reports that we see from the likes of Nabtrade and CommSec. By upgrading to a subscription account you get more access to reports. Another option would be opening a Nabtrade account and trading through SelfWealth.

App and Website

Website Breakdown: The SelfWealth website is relatively easy to use and is packed with a lot of great features. One key simple thing that makes a big difference is the portfolio tracker which graphs the value of your portfolio over time and benchmarks not only to the wider market but to other investors and friends. This is a simple feature which is lacking from their competitors.

What SelfWealth lacks in research, it more than makes up for in functionality. The small features that allow you to more closely track your holdings and ensure you’re working towards your targets are true assets to investors and something I can see myself using.

App Breakdown: SelfWealth’s app is decent and allows all the major features of its platform. Compared to some of our other peaks it is a little harder to use and less intuitive but is still a great platform.

CommSec

Commsec, Best International Share Trading Platforms, International Brokers, Best International Brokers,

CommSec is the most popular trading platform in Australia. They combine quality research and support into an excellent trading platform. However, their fees are higher than their competitors. Their high brokerage fees make them the most expensive option on our list.

Best For: Research and Big Bank Piece of Mind

Research

CommSec does an excellent job of presenting research information. When we view a stock we are presented with a number of research profiles from top-tier companies like Goldman Sachs and Morningstar. These are presented in easy-to-read snippets and also full reports. This information is all compiled into the general Consensus for the stock.

We can see we also have fundamentals clearly displayed. CommSec also has good charting software and collated financial information for stocks in an easy-to-read table format.

CommSec allows for easy searching of securities via their search bar. All in all the website functions well and is easy to use, but we expected a little more from the biggest broker in Australia.

App Breakdown: Using the CommSec Mobile App seemed a little slow. Much like the NabTrade app, it feels like CommSec has presented too much information to us on a small platform, leaving the app feeling crowded.

One thing I notice is the lack of an integrated search bar, meaning to look up stocks you have to first click into the ‘more’ section ‘Get a Quote’ and then search for the stock. This is executed poorly compared to the integrated search bar that all other platforms have.

IG Markets

IG , Best International Share Trading Platforms, International Brokers, Best International Brokers, IG

IG is Australia’s top CFD and Forex provider. When it comes to international share trading their platform is lacking. Their website is poorly designed and in our opinion one of the weakest user interfaces on our list. They provide no stock research. At lower capital, their fees are very competitive but can get expensive with larger investments.

This year they come in last place on our Best International Share Trading Platforms List. Although they still beat a large number of International Brokers to make the list.

Best For: A large variety of Financial Products

Pros

Best International Share Trading Platforms Australia Prophet’s Take

In making this list we have sorted through a large number of brokers offering international trading. From these quite a few didn’t make the list. The main reasons for not making the cut was due to exorbitant hidden fees and confusing fee structures.

From those that made the Best International Share Trading Platforms list we have ordered them regarding fees, availability of products, research, and user experience. These are the factors we find most important when choosing a broker.

Etoro has topped our list due to its very cheap fees for both large and small investments, they also offer a lot of products and international markets on an easy-to-use platform with all the necessary research. Stake comes in at a very close second and is that platform we have been personally using for our US investments. Their fees are reasonable at lower amounts but can be quite expensive at larger sums. We like that this platform is simple to use and does the job well.
