August 2021 Earnings Reporting Season Calendar

The coming month is going to be make-or-break for a lot of companies as we begin to see earnings released in the upcoming Reporting Season. After companies’ earnings were devastated last year, this could be the biggest season yet. Here’s Why, and our Reporting Season Calendar.

Why this will be the Biggest Reporting Season Yet?

Massive Expectations and Inflated PE Ratios

Anyone that has read Prophet’s Analysis articles has likely heard the phrase “Inflated PE Ratios”. What we are referring to here is the current state of the market average PE ratio, which is massively inflated compared to its average valuation of 15-20x.

The PE ratio or Price to Earnings is a metric for valuing a company that measures its current share price relative to its per-share earnings allowing comparison between companies. The PE ratio can be interpreted as the amount you pay for $1 in company profits.

Since companies’ earnings were severely impacted during the COVID recession and share prices have since recovered with the ASX 200 reaching all-time highs, this has caused artificially inflated PE Ratios across the market.

We can see that on a graph the current PE ratio has shot up from its average approaching upwards of 50x.

PE 15-20: Average

PE 20+: The company is overvalued/has high investor sentiment regarding growth

Ultimate Stock DD Checklist

Based on current earnings we can say that the market is severely overvalued. The movement and recovery of share prices have thus shown sentiment that investors are expecting a full recovering in company earnings. This would balance out the PE ratio back to average.

If the market severely falls short of expectation we could see a market correction.

The Return of Dividends

Following the loss of earnings, we saw companies cut dividends across the board, leading to a massive reduction in the average dividend yield across the market. Now averaging below 4%. We saw the 4 big banks, which are known as massive dividend stocks, cut their yield by around 50% in 2020. Here’s our report on CBA’s dividend.

Following the return of earnings, we are expecting to see dividends returning to attractive yields. Though we can’t expect past payout ratios, as many companies will elect to hold a large amount of cash on hand to strengthen their balance sheet against future uncertainties.

Across the market, we are expecting to see payout ratios increase by more than 10%. Which will have a big impact on the average yield rate. We are expecting to see the big banks return more than $30 Billion to shareholders.

Fluctuating Earnings:

It’s no surprise earnings have fluctuated over the past year. In these times of uncertainty, we have seen a barrage of earnings upgrades and downgrades across a lot of our listed companies.

Going into earnings season we are expected big fluctuations in earnings and are expecting a lot of volatility across the market in both bullish and bearish patterns.

The Share Market Overall Outlook

Following on from the COVID recession we are expecting solid earnings results from the majority of companies. We are expecting to see a quick “V-shaped” recovery in earnings. The overall market is also expecting this and has priced in recovery as we can see by the share price trend.

Energy Sector:

We are expecting decent results from the energy sector as we have seen profits surge following the increase of Iron ore price. Both demand and prices have lifted over the period, resulting in a number of earnings upgrades within the energy and resources sectors.

Industry Sector:

It’s no surprise that utilities, tourism, and travel companies have been severely impacted by the downturn. Companies dependant on international travel will still see no recovery, and domestic travel companies will still struggle with border closures, lockdowns, and isolations.

We will see a disappointing result from hospitality, accommodation, gaming operators, and toll road operators. However, this has been priced in by the market as their share prices are largely yet to recover.

Banking Sector:

The banking sector will produce surprising results with the increased demand for mortgages and the increase in interest rates from the previous year. However, we will still see loan deferrals and impairments. We are expecting to see a big recovery by banks but not reaching all-time highs.

Healthcare Sector:

The Healthcare sector will vary greatly. We will see higher revenues by a lot of businesses. But we expect companies dependent on the US market to suffer. For example, we are expecting great results from CSL’s vaccine programs, but a severe impact on their US collections.

Technology Sector:

The Technology sector is largely set to benefit the companies that were able to adapt and respond to the pandemic. We saw an increase in e-commerce sales and are expecting to see some big results from some of our technology sector.

What is Reporting Season?

Earnings season is the one-month period where the majority of ASX-listed companies release their financial statements to shareholders.

Every six months listed Australian companies are required by the ASX to report their financial conditions. Many major companies will report on a quarterly basis as well. The ASX required companies with a June/December balance sheet to release quarter results by the 31st of July and half-yearly/Full Yearly reports by the 31st of August. Source, CommSec.

Since most companies in the ASX 200 have a June/December balance sheet we see a massive amount of results released during August, hence the name ‘reporting season’.

Around 140 companies ASX 200 companies have a June balance date. Thus we will see a Full-Year statement from them. Around 30 companies have a December balance date, from these ones we will see a Half-Year statement. The other ASX 200 companies have different balance dates, and won’t be reporting.
